Iowa School for Ministry 2010 - Tragedy and Hope

Preaching When You May Not Really Want to Preach

Tom Long, Steve Kraftchick, and Luke Powery will explore how the preacher can proclaim hope in the midst of tragedy, whether death is near to the heart of the congregation and the preacher or more distant from them both.

Death and tragedy can overwhelm human beings emotionally. Clergy are no exception. Yet, whether the tragedy is a natural disaster, or the death of a close friend, or the suicide of a church member or the death of a member who has not been in worship for years, clergy must proclaim God’s word of hope. In the midst of their own pain and anguish and even when they don’t know the deceased at all, clergy have to preach the word to those in their care.

The 2010 faculty biographies of Dr. Thomas Long, Dr. Steve Kraftchick and Dr. Luke Powery can be found on the School for Ministry website. The Tuesday worship service was conducted by Bishop Julius Trimble, Resident Bishop of the Iowa Area of the United Methodist Church.
